Sarah Evelyn Rusmisell
Sarah Evelyn Rusmisell, 78, of Buckhannon, beloved mother and grandmother, passed from this life on July 3, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon. Sarah was under the care of St. Joseph’s Hospice following an extended stay at Serenity Care Assisted Living in Buckhannon.
Sarah was born August 4, 1930, in Windber, PA, a daughter of the late Walter and Mary (Hoffman) Meek.
Sarah made Buckhannon her home in 1952, following her graduation from West Virginia Wesleyan and her marriage to Fred, who predeceased her in 1997. Sarah earned her degree in Home Economics from Wesleyan , but after several years as a homemaker, she started a career as a social worker for the WV Department of Human Services. She retired after 25 years and then worked as a substitute teacher for Upshur County Schools.
Sarah was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Upshur County Democratic Women’s Club, the Emeritus Club of Wesleyan College, and Literacy Volunteers. She was a member of a Senior Aerobics class that gave her much enjoyment and remained active with her college sorority at Wesleyan, Alpha Delta Pi, and her fellow retirees from the DHHR.
Sarah is survived by her son, Fred of Buckhannon and her daughter, Sarah Jane Slaughter and her husband, Alan of Parkersburg; two grandsons, Barrett of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Cam of Santa Monica, CA; brother Orrin, married to Carol (Pfhaler) of Johnstown, PA, sister in laws, Mary (Helman), widow of Marlin; Marian (Wirick), widow of Albert, both of New Port Richey, FL; Eunice (Beckley) Smith, widow of Edgar, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Fred H. Rusmisell, II; brothers, Barrett, Camden, Edgar, Marlin, Albert, and William; and sister, Mary, widow of Alonzo Seese.
Friends will be received Monday, July 6, 2009, from 5 – 8 PM at the Poling St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, July 7, at the funeral home with the Reverend Dr. Damon Rhodes. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery.
